MAPPING OF MEMORIES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD STRUGGLE IN MADRID
CARABANCHEL ALTO AND MESETA DE ORCASITAS
In this project we have elaborated a graphic and sound cartography focused on the neighborhoods of Carabanchel Alto and Meseta de Orcasitas in the late Francoism and the Transition, reflecting the history and evolution of their movements of association and neighborhood struggle, with an emphasis on the role that women played in them.
We have materialized this research in two maps with which to walk these neighborhoods accompanied by the voices and stories of those who participated in these mobilizations. For this we have collaborated with Irene Sempere, who has taken care of the design, and Alberto García Aznar, who has edited the sound material. This project has been supported by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory.
We will present these maps on January 16 at 18:30 at the Neighborhood Association of Orcasitas (Plaza Asociación, 0) and on January 23 at 18:30 at the García Lorca Cultural Center in Carabanchel Alto (Calle Eugenia de Montijo, 105). More information here.
THIS MONTH WE WALK...
JARDINES DE AGUA, LECHE, VINO Y MIEL
Fourth session of Ciudad Sur
This session starts with a call to take time to stop and observe. We are invited to do so by the green of the gardens, spaces designed for meditation and recreation, which can connect us with more spiritual dimensions. To walk through them is also to move through the projection of a fantasy on the ground.
Thus, we will think of the importance of green for Islamic culture, whose legacy is imprinted in our time despite the oblivion of the Eurocentric gaze. In its traces, gardens act as places of crossroads of beliefs and cultures. Together with the artist and researcher Aicha Josefa Trinidad, we will walk through imaginary gardens, fantasies of fountains, fruit trees and perfumed flowers; visible and invisible stories and tales, yet to be imagined, or that we have not stopped to contemplate.
The session will be held on January 21 at 18.00 h. and is free to attend with prior registration. You can find out the details and register here.
COMING SOON
EL MADRID DE ALMADA
In this walk we travel through the avant-garde Madrid experienced by José de Almada Negreiros, a scene in which the Portuguese modernist painter participated intensely during his stay between the late twenties and early thirties.
Throughout these routes we have reflected on the influence and legacy of the artist in the imaginary of the city, where he experienced a very fruitful moment for his creative production. And we will also pay attention to the forms and spaces of collectivity of this avant-garde scene at the time, to which Almada frequently went to take part in meetings and gatherings.
Soon we will make public new dates for this tour, which we carry out in collaboration with the Embassy of Portugal in Spain. You can learn more details here.
SOUND MAPS, MEMORIES AND NEIGHBOURHOOD STRUGGLES
The Cartography of Memories of Neighbourhood Struggles in Madrid research continues! In this project we are immersed in the elaboration of two sound maps, of Carabanchel Alto and Meseta de Orcasitas, which will allow us to walk through these neighbourhoods guided by the listening of citizens' memories.
In this process, we have visited neighbourhood associations, consulted archives, and recorded some of the voices that have been part of these neighbourhood mobilisations, with a special focus on the voices of women, who have left testimony of their forms of organisation and participation in these struggles.
On January 16, 2025 we will present these maps at the Asociación Vecinal de Orcasitas, and on January 23, 2025 at the Centro Cultural García Lorca.
More details to be shared soon!
